Whilst studying languages at the University of Leeds, Rona completed a placement at Brigshaw High School. She fell in love with the ethos of the school and the languages department and knew it would be the best place for her to complete her teacher training. We asked Rona what it's like to train at the BLP and her advice for anyone considering training to teach.
Hi! My name is Rona, I’m from Somerset and I am a current MFL trainee, specifically German and French. I studied German and Chinese Mandarin at the University of Leeds and graduated in 2023.
I decided to teach now as I wanted to make sure it was the right career path for me and I loved teaching English as a foreign language in the two years prior. I chose to teach at BLP because I did a placement with the University of Leeds at Brigshaw High School in 2022-2023 and I fell in love with the ethos of the school and specifically the language department.
When I came back for my interview, I knew it had to be Brigshaw. I knew I wanted to be based in a school as I wanted to be with the students as soon as possible. My favourite thing about the programme is how hands-on it is! I have been in lessons since the beginning of September and I have formed amazing relationships with the students in my classes. It means I have a better rapport with my students and curate more specific lessons for them. I get great support from my mentor, the other BLP trainees, other members of the department and even other members of staff within the school community. There are so many opportunities in the school to get involved outside of the classroom and the trainee programme so I feel supported in all aspects.
If you are thinking about training with BLP next year, I would say to just go for it. Everyone is so supportive and there is such a positive atmosphere in the schools. It has been great to experience other schools within the trust as well as Brigshaw High School, which is an experience truly unique to the BLP. I have also been able to gain experience working with SEND students in an environment that is truly flexible in order to cater to all students. My aspirations for the future are to continue to educate students about languages and make them as accessible to as many students as possible. I also have aspirations for a pastoral role in my future and make sure every student gets a great deal with their education.
