What our trainee teachers say about us

Last year, Georgina decided to make a career change.
Her previous work experience had shown her how much she enjoyed developing others and she couldn't wait to make a difference in the classroom. We asked Georgina, 5 months into her teacher training, to share why she decided to change career and what it's like to train to teach with the BLP.
I knew it had to be Brigshaw
Whilst studying languages at the University of Leeds, Rona completed a placement at Brigshaw High School. She fell in love with the ethos of the school and the languages department and knew it would be the best place for her to complete her training.
A change of direction
After taking a short break from work after the birth of her youngest daughter, Sarah felt now was the right time to pursue a new path. She was drawn to the warmth and community feel of the BLP primaries.
Making a difference. Locally.
As someone who grew up and went to school in Kippax, Victoria looks back on her own school days fondly. When she decided to train to teach, she knew she wanted to make a difference to the local community.

Application review

Once your application is received, your application will be assessed by our recruitment team and leaders in our schools.  We are looking for excellent graduates, who are commited to our mission of ensuring every one of our children lives a life of choice and opportunity.

You must have:

  • Alignment with our values and ethos, including a strong moral purpose for improving the lives of young people in East Leeds
  • A passion for their subject
  • Some experience with young people (it doesn’t need to be in school) and ability to form relationships inside and outside the classroom
  • Great communication skills
  • Resilience and creativity (teaching is hard!)
  • Great communication skills
  • Curiosity and an eagerness to learn
  • Self-awareness and ability to act on feedback to improve (you’ll receive lots of this during the programme)
  • Fluency in spoken and written English and suitability to train to teach, including meeting the required competencies by the end of the programme

Our Schools

Founded in 2016, The Brigshaw Learning Partnership is a family of seven schools, all committed to providing exceptional education for the East Leeds community.

You will be placed at one of our amazing schools for your main placement. From the get-go, you'll spend 4 days a week in this school and one day a week in training with your tutor and other trainees.

At some point in the year, you will complete a second school placement at another school (likely to be in the spring term). There will be additional opportunities to visit other educational settings throughout the year.

Interview

If you meet our requirements and can demonstrate your commitment to our mission, then you will be invited to interview.  If successful, your interview will include:

  • a short teaching episode followed by a panel interview;
  • a subject knowledge test;
  • a written task.

Conditional Offer

If you’re successful, we’ll make you a conditional offer to join our teacher training programme.  Some of the key conditions will be that you:

  • have DBS Clearance
  • have your qualifications checked
  • confirmed your fitness to train to teach
  • have met the references criteria
  • have strong literacy and numeracy skills

Subject knowledge enhancement

Some applicants may require or would benefit from a subject knowledge enhancement course (SKE), which is available in all shortage subjects. We strongly recommend this as a way of ensuring that you are well-equipped and confident to train. Many SKE courses are subsidised nationally. They vary in length and models of learning and include online courses.
