Sarah had considered teaching in the past but the circumstances had not been right. After taking a short break from work after the birth of her youngest daughter, she felt now was the right time to pursue a new path and was drawn to the warmth and community feel of the BLP primaries. Sarah studied Fine Art at The University of Huddersfield before choosing to train as a primary teacher at Kippax Ashtree Primary School.
We spoke to Sarah to find our why she chose to train to teach with us and to hear about the support she receives on the programme.
I attended a taster day at Methley Primary School when I was initially looking at training to teach. The warmth and approach to learning was what made me choose the BLP. I also love the idea of being able to train within a trust that is linked to the local community and hope to stay within the trust after completing my training.
My favourite thing about the programme is being part of the community. There is such a wealth of knowledge and skill that I feel privileged to be able to learn from.
My day to day support is from my mentor, Trys, who I am in the classroom with four days a week. She supports and guides me through all aspects of teaching and I feel we have built a really good relationship.
In addition, Carys, our Director of ITT, is always available if I have any concerns around training or other aspects of the course, she is always willing to listen and help.
If you are already considering BLP I would absolutely recommend them. Training to teach is intense and you will likely feel overwhelmed at times, especially at the beginning, but there are so many people within the trust who are there to support you every step of the way.
I would love to stay within one of the BLP primaries during my ECT year. This is because of the community link and was one of the main reasons I chose to train with the trust. Longer term, I would love to use my degree and explore the possibility of being a Subject Lead in art.
