Victoria's story

Making a difference. Locally.

As someone who grew up and went to school in Kippax, Victoria looks back on her own school days fondly. When she decided to train to teach, she knew she wanted to make a difference to the local community.

As someone who grew up and went to school in Kippax, Victoria looks back on her own schools days fondly.  When she decided to train to teach, she knew she wanted to make a difference to the local community.  We asked Victoria why she was so motivated to train at the Brigshaw Learning Partnership and what she loves about the programme.

Why did you choose to train to teach at the BLP?
I came to teacher training after almost 20 years in the creative industry.  I worked on greeting card design and for an online surface pattern design school. I’ve also had in interest in teaching and passing on knowledge and skills and look back on my own school days as some of my fondest memories.  My own children are at a trust school and what appealed to me was the ethos of local people from the community teaching the next generation.

What is your favourite thing about the programme?
My favourite thing about the programme is that you get straight into the classroom, making connections with children and peers immediately. You don’t sit studying for weeks before you are straight in and put to task.

What support do you receive on the programme?
I feel well supported on the programme starting with Carys who leads the programme and keeps us updated every step of the way. My mentors Grace and Becky are generous with their time and knowledge and all the staff in my placement school are always happy to help and share their thoughts.

What would you say to someone thinking about training with the BLP next year?
My best advice would me to book onto a taster session, get into school and you will instantly know whether it’s the place for you!

Where are your aspirations for the future?
I would love to work at one of the trust schools as I firmly believe in the vision and values set. Something that really sticks out to me is reading – I have my own passion for it but seeing how some children struggle with it makes me feel this is an area I really would like to have an impact on to ensure we have a generation of learners that feel the joy of learning and acquiring new knowledge every single day.
